Every minute of every day, someone needs blood. That blood can only come from a volunteer donor, a person like you who makes the choice to donate. There is no substitute for people’s donation. Currently only 3 out of every 100 people in America donate blood. Since inception, primarily after World War II, blood transfusions have become an integral part of medical practice. If not for the ready availability of blood components, life-saving medical treatments, such as the treatment of serious injuries, organ transplants, bone marrow transplants, complicated surgical procedures and cancer treatment, would not be possible. It is estimated that 5 million recipients are transfused with blood components, including red blood cells, platelets and plasma, in the U.S. annually. A pint of blood, separated in to components, can help up to three people. About 60 percent of the population are eligible to donate blood, yet less than five percent do. It's safe, simple and it saves lives. According to these facts, blood donation is really important in our everyday life. Through my research, people know that blood donation is important to save people’s lives, but they do not realize how useful their blood can be and how easy it is. I would like to increase people’s awareness for blood donation. Your little help can make the difference between live and death for someone who needs blood transfusion.
Project Description: As you pump the red button, water pump, on the box that connected five-gallon bottle, you will activate the red ink to flow along the tube; the various heights of the tube line represent information on amount of eligibility, donation and usages of the donated blood. the peak of the wave illustrates the highest and the bottom of the wave illustrates the lower value. the overall wave represents a heartbeat; it also visually guides the viewer to the cross that installed at far-right side of this project and a slogan, “The need is constant the gratification is instant give blood”. when the cross is fully filled with red-ink, it will become a symbol of American Red Cross. I try to show donating blood is simple as pumping my installation. Through these interactive installation, I was trying to visualize general information on blood donation and persuade viewer how much important, how much you can help and how easy it is.
